Circoloco-DC-10 in Ibiza ordered to shut down!
Words: Ibiza Voice

After a glorious start to the season the Spanish authorities have stepped in to quash DC10 - declaring last year's 60 day closure order must stand, and that the club which was closed for days last June has to serve the "remaining" 57 days of its ban.

Ibiza Voice spoke exclusively to Circoloco's Andrea Pelino, who is understandably devastated by the news. "I feel like DC10 is the monster of the island, like they hate us. I don't understand why this always happens," he says, audibly upset. The decision appears timed to cause maximum havoc to Circoloco. One-hundred plus security, staff and DJs have been contracted for the summer. Fans and friends have booked their holidays to Ibiza. All eyes are on the island and the message that will be flashed around the world tomorrow will - undoubtedly - be "drug den DC10 shut down."

Event Review: BOOKA SHADE LIVE
Words: ResidentAdvisor.net

Back in the '90s, things used to be so much clearer: The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy were definitely dance, Blur and Radiohead were definitely indie bands. Advancing technology and consumer appetites for new sounds, though, have brought these two halves together, and, as familiar as this discussion sounds, there are still surprises to be had. Dancefloor-slanted bands like Bloc Party and the Klaxons are old hat, but on the other hand, there are underground club producers like Trentemøller and Booka Shade widening the spectrum of live electronic music from too-familiar DJ and knobs-and-buttons antics.

Having been disappointed with Trentemøller's London performance last year, I was slightly skeptical about whether Get Physical's top cats could produce the goods. Would their soulful, danceable riffs, tight grooves and excellent taste for lush, classic yet fresh sounds translate appropriately into a live setting?

Luciano mixes Fabric 41
Words: ResidentAdvisor.net

Cadenza boss Luciano mixes minimal, tribal and house on his new mix for Fabric. Fabric 41 is out next month.

Luciano is famously averse to CD mixes, but Fabric have managed to twist his arm into delivering the goods. “For me, the hardest thing to do is make a mix CD. Really,” says Swiss/Chilean minimal star. “It was a big decision for me to do a CD for Fabric. To me, mixing is about the live moments, it’s about the moment you live with the people: that’s why you choose one record, and this is how you push the music. So to make a mix CD and already have a playlist in my head, it’s something that disturbs me. Then I know I have to play this and that—I feel obliged to do something rather than feeling free to just create something."

The pick of the afters for this year's Love Parade in Dortmund is the Circle of Love pool party. Circle of Love is the Love Parade's official after hours happening. Held at a swimming pool park in Dortmund, dance music's current holy triumvirate Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano headline the 12-hour daytime-into-nighttime technosplash with Dubfire, Tiefschwarz, Onur Özer and Monika Kruse, Daniel 'Mumblin' Yeah' Sanchez, Oslo hot property Johnny D and even Moby lining up across two stages. Besides the music, there's lots of grassy areas, sandy faux beaches and, of course, an Olympic-sized pool for a spot of night swimming.

Under the gun: Dixon
Words: ResidentAdvisor.net

Jeremy Armitage corners Innervisions CEO Dixon in a Berlin coffee shop to find out what’s on his playlist.

“I would love to play more songs, but show them to me,” sighs Dixon. “Maybe I find one actual song a month that I really like where it's not just about the beat and voice, you know? I'm always looking for a song that is just perfect just the way it is. Ten years ago it was four a week or something.”

The pop-conscious house sound of Dixon and his Innervisions imprint has been one of dance music’s biggest success stories over the last few years, but it didn’t just happen overnight. Dixon himself has roots in drum n bass and even Atari Teenage Riot-style digital noise, as well as a long resume of residencies in Berlin that stretches back to the mid-nineties. Historically, he's tied to Jazzanova and the downtempo/broken beat scene, a loose and varied scene which even saw him as recently as 2005 releasing a yoga-themed mix CD. In short, it’s a career which has never quite slotted in to the prevailing sound, especially in a techno-oriented town such as Berlin.

REVIEW: Global Breakthrough Festival 2008: Mind Blowing!
Words: Rob Dickens, Clubber / Writer / FHM Digital Editor

I was thrown wide-eyed lunatic into the musical maelstrom of Global Breakthrough 2008. I don’t think I was prepared enough. I expected aural assault of the highest global caliber and I got it. Within hours of touching down in the visually overwhelming Cape Town, I was immersed in what can only be described as an auditory kaleidoscope of such epic proportions that I literally had to step back and pinch myself.

When engaging in the Global Breakthrough brand, one needs to understand that it’s not some flippant encounter with an acquaintance. It’s like a bear hug from a long lost sibling. You must breathe the experience. From dusk to dawn and back to dusk again, it is a roller coaster of thrills.

The underground is rising indeed and for this jaded Jo’burg clubgoer it was, once again, refreshing to see the beating heart of dance culture alive and pumping in Cape Town. Puts us to shame really.

Our first evening was the launch party at Karma overlooking the matchless Camps Bay strip. Perfectly chosen and executed. I think the elation of the forthcoming days overwhelmed most of us as we all raised our glasses to the spirit of Global Breakthrough. Luciano, Henrik Schwarz and Kristian of Ame became instant companions and friends and we all became family. This was our party. All of us. Superstar DJ and fan alike. Friends and strangers. Locals and foreigners. It was about all of us and music was the universal truth.

This is the true spirit of Global Breakthrough. The breakthrough symbolizes the breaking down of barriers and unification, long lost in the shattered remnants of raves of yore. I often wonder where that feeling went. Was it some illusion? What causes that feeling?

I’ll tell you what. Honesty and integrity toward music. Total trust in the music and in the pioneers who will deliver it.

Global Breakthrough is made up of a crew so dedicated to that task that it is sometimes humbling to be in their presence. If you just sit quietly and absorb the essence of Global Breakthrough, you start to understand that it’s about something much bigger than a party or five. It’s about delivering a journey. A journey that will etch memories into the very fibre of your being.

After the launch party, on Thursday, it was a wild ride that included helicopter flips up the coast to Camps Bay, marveling at the utter beauty of Cape Town from the air. If you thought it was beautiful from the ground you will be absolutely gobsmacked to view it from the air. From there it was off to an exclusive cruise on a luxury yacht. To put it mildly, it was an experience of a lifetime and it’s taken me a while to come back down to earth and stop clicking my fingers as if five nubile virgins are suddenly going to jump at my beck and call. It’s the high life indeed, yet spent with what had now become the core group of Global Breakthrough 2008 hounds.

Another strange and noticeable effect is that all of these people from all corners of South Africa and the globe gelled perfectly and comfortably together with little encouragement. As if we’d all known each other for years and years and were close friends. It’s amazing what like-minded purpose can do and the common bond of music flowed through all our veins equally.

Friday night was the much-anticipated Luciano. Amazingly, a last minute venue change was miraculously dealt with by the Global Breakthrough team with military precision. That indelible night will be forever marked in my memory. The venue fantastic, the organization impeccable, the bars professionally run. Everything ran perfectly. The crowd was up for it and remarkably educated to the sounds. Bruno Morphet kicked off an incredible warm up set before Luciano took us on a whirlwind trip through tech, house and minimal that left many of us speechless, before being joined for an impromptu back to back with Kristian from Ame which was almost too hot to handle. I honestly thought the roof would lift. Amazing!

I have to admit that by Saturday night I was burnt out. Call me soft if you will. I attended Henrik Schwarz and I vaguely recall a different crowd, no less up for it than the night before though. The music, once again, was mind-blowing.

In fact, I’d have to admit that mind-blowing is probably the best one word summation of the entire trip.

This is by no means a full recollection of the entire festival. Global Breakthrough is growing in leaps and bounds and Jamie Joseph needs to be congratulated once again on pulling it off. I really do not know how she does it, but I am eternally grateful that she does. She’s a magician who weaves her special magic into the very heart and soul of what Global Breakthrough is. The fringe events to the festival are growing, including incredible helicopter flips and yacht cruises… and this is just the beginning of Jamie’s vision. Rumour has it swimming with dolphins and Wild safari is on the cards for next year’s festival adventure.

I once again, wholeheartedly, praise and support Global Breakthrough. I do not believe there are any other party promoters within South Africa that have anywhere near the vision, drive, and determination to bring bleeding edge dance music, producers and culture to our shores. Luciano, Kristian from Ame and Henrik Schwarz are of such impeccable quality worldwide that it totally amazes me that I managed to enjoy 5 days in Cape Town, not only listening to them cast their aural spells, but also just to hang with them, and the crew from Global Breakthrough.

It’s humbling and I’m so truly grateful.

What’s even more amazing is that I’m already excited to see what they do next year. Guaranteed it’s going to be off the chain.

Much love and thanks to the whole Global Breakthrough crew.
